Indoor vs. Outdoor Newborn Photos: How to Choose?

June 20, 2026

One of the first things I discuss with expecting parents is whether they should choose indoor or outdoor newborn photos. The truth is, there isn’t a right or wrong answer. Both options are beautiful, meaningful, and tell your family’s story in different ways.

Some families love the cozy intimacy of an in-home newborn session, while others are drawn to the golden light and natural beauty of the beach. And sometimes, the perfect answer is a little bit of both.

Let’s explore the advantages of each so you can decide what feels most like you.

Outdoor Newborn Photos at the Beach

When most people think of newborn photography, they picture a cozy session at home. But outdoor newborn photos can be absolutely magical, especially here in the South Bay.

From the iconic Manhattan Beach Pier to the relaxed beauty of Hermosa Beach, the family-friendly atmosphere of Redondo Beach, and the dramatic coastal scenery of Palos Verdes, we are lucky to have some of the most beautiful locations imaginable right in our backyard.

Parents often wonder: “Can we really do newborn photos at the beach?”

The answer is yes, and it’s often much easier than you expect.

Newborn beach sessions are relaxed, simple, and focused on connection. We aren’t hiking long distances or expecting your baby to do anything other than be snuggled safely in your arms or Moses basket. Most of the session is spent cuddling, walking slowly along the shoreline, and soaking in those sweet early days together.

Why Families Love Outdoor Newborn Photos

  • Beautiful natural light, especially during golden hour
  • Gorgeous ocean backdrops that feel timeless and serene
  • Images that capture both your growing family and the beauty of the South Bay

And if you’re worried about bringing a newborn to the beach, don’t be. I help guide the entire process and keep things simple and comfortable for everyone.

Indoor Newborn Photos at Home

There is something undeniably special about photographing your family in the place where your story is unfolding right now.

An in-home newborn session allows us to document those early days exactly as they are. The nursery you carefully prepared, the favorite chair where you spend countless hours feeding your baby, and the spaces that will hold so many memories in the years ahead.

The beauty of indoor newborn photos is that they require very little from you.

No packing the diaper bag.

No loading everyone into the car.

No worrying about weather.

You simply get to stay home and settle into your family’s natural rhythm.

Why Families Love In-Home Newborn Sessions

  • The comfort and familiarity of home
  • No travel or packing required
  • Easy access to feedings, diaper changes, and outfit changes
  • A wonderful option for families with siblings

For families with toddlers or young children, staying home can be especially helpful. Siblings have their toys, snacks, and familiar surroundings nearby, which often helps them feel more relaxed and comfortable.

And despite what many new parents worry about, your home does not need to be perfect.

I promise.

We only need a few rooms with good natural light, and I will guide you every step of the way.

Can We Do Both Indoor and Outdoor Newborn Photos?

Absolutely.

In fact, I love when families choose this option.

One of my favorite ways to photograph a newborn session is to begin at home and then finish at the beach just before sunset.

The timing is perfect. Everyone is usually feeling more relaxed by then, and we get the most beautiful golden hour light. It gives your gallery incredible variety while allowing you to enjoy the best of both worlds.

You get the emotional storytelling of an in-home session combined with the breathtaking beauty of outdoor newborn photos.

Honestly, it’s a dream combination. Below is an example of a newborn session that started at home and then ended on the beach.

How Do I Choose?

If you’re trying to decide between indoor and outdoor newborn photos, my biggest advice is this:

There is no wrong answer.

The best choice is simply the one that feels right for your family.

If you love the idea of documenting this season exactly where it is happening, home may be the perfect fit.

If you feel happiest by the ocean and want beautiful sunset imagery, outdoor newborn photos at the beach might be calling your name.

And if both options sound wonderful, let’s do both.

At the end of the day, the location matters far less than the love we capture. Whether we’re in your nursery, walking along the shoreline in Manhattan Beach, or watching the sun set over Palos Verdes, the goal is always the same:

To preserve this beautiful season with heart.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are indoor or outdoor newborn photos better?

Neither is better, it’s simply about what feels right for your family. Outdoor newborn photos offer beautiful natural scenery and golden light, while in-home sessions provide comfort, convenience, and a deeply personal backdrop.

Can newborn photos be taken at the beach?

Yes! Outdoor newborn photos at the beach are safe and surprisingly easy. Most of the session involves snuggling your baby while enjoying the beautiful scenery and soft sunset light.

When is the best time to take newborn photos?

The best time is typically within the first 2-6 weeks after birth. During this stage, babies are still very sleepy and curled up, while parents have had a little time to settle into life at home.

How long does a newborn session take?

Most newborn sessions last about 60-90 minutes. This allows plenty of time for feeding, diaper changes, sibling breaks, and a relaxed pace without feeling rushed.

Can siblings be included in newborn photos?

Absolutely. Whether we’re at home or on the beach, siblings are always welcome. I keep things playful and low-pressure so kids can be themselves and we can capture genuine connection.
